About This City
Camarillo is a city in Ventura County, California, USA. The city was incorporated in 1964 and is named for the Camarillo family. Camarillo is located on land that was once known as Calleguas Rancho. Calleguas Rancho was granted to Jose Pedro Ruiz by Governor Alvarado in 1847 as one of the last Mexican land grants. In 1875 Juan Camarillo purchased the rancho from the Ruiz family for $3,000 in gold. Following Juan’s death in 1880, eldest son Adolfo assumed control of ranch operations. Over the next 68 years Adolfo migrated the operation from mostly cattle to crops. Adolfo was a leading innovator bringing in lima beans, barley, corn, alfalfa, walnuts, and citrus. The rancho remained in the Camarillo family until the 1960s.
