Scattered shower and thunderstorm chances return to western Iowa late this afternoon and evening, but the main storm system will move through much of the area late tonight into early Friday. The environment will be favorable for efficient rainfall with swaths of 1 to 3 inch rainfall expected. Locally higher rainfall amounts are possible if multiple storms track over the same areas. With the efficient rainfall, rates will also be fairly high. As a result, ponding of water and isolated flash flooding will be possible, with the greatest risk being in urban areas. Dry soils in rural areas could also become overwhelmed by the efficient rainfall rates, but the flash flood risk is lower compared to urban areas.
