Frigid temperatures persist today with highs in the single digits above and below zero. An Extreme Cold Warning is in effect for northwest South Dakota for wind chills as low as 45 below zero, while a Cold Weather Advisory continues across the rest of the western South Dakota plains for wind chills reaching 35 below zero. In these extreme conditions, frostbite can occur on exposed skin in as little as 10 minutes.
Light snow will linger throughout the day, though little to no accumulation is expected. Verycold air remains tonight as wind chills drop between 10 and 25 below zero. While we will see a slight warming trend through the weekend, temperatures are expected to stay below freezing until milder air finally returns early next week.
